Let’s Find Answers Together
- Understanding Endometriosis
-
Endometriosis is a common condition that causes the endometrium (the tissue that lines the uterus) to grow outside the uterus, most commonly affecting the ovaries, fallopian tubes or tissue in the pelvis.
Normally, the endometrium in your uterus thickens during your menstrual cycle. Then, it breaks down and exits the body during your cycle. The endometrium that grows outside your uterus is also hardening during your cycle but is unable to leave the body. This causes irritation, scar tissue and adhesions that can become very painful.
- Endometriosis Symptoms
-
There are many symptoms of endometriosis. Some women may experience mild symptoms while others experience more severe endometriosis symptoms and pain. Other symptoms include:
- Bloating or nausea (especially during menstrual periods)
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Heavy bleeding between periods
- Heavy periods
- Infertility
- Pain during intercourse
- Painful bowel movements or urination
- Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
- Pelvic pain
- Endometriosis Treatment
-
There are several effective treatments for endometriosis to help ease your pain and, if desired, improve your fertility. Your doctor may discuss one or more of the following endometriosis treatments:
- Fertility treatments
- Hormone therapy
- Hysterectomy for endometriosis
- Pain medication
- Heavy Bleeding
-
Heavy menstrual bleeding can be caused by many different conditions or issues, including endometriosis, endocrine disorders or menorrhagia.
Menorrhagia is a very heavy period that lasts more than seven days. Heavy bleeding during a period is defined as needing to change a pad or tampon after two hours or less, or if you pass blood clots the size of a quarter or larger. If you’re experiencing heavy bleeding, you should see your doctor to help identify possible heavy period causes, which may include:
- Bleeding-related disorders
- Hormone-related disorders
- Liver, kidney or thyroid disease
- Uterine-related issues
Talk to your doctor about your heavy periods if you experience a sudden heavy period, regular heavy menstrual bleeding or heavy bleeding between your periods.
- Treating Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
-
Most women experience urinary tract infections (UTIs) at some point in their lives.
A UTI happens when bacteria get into the urinary tract. A UTI can affect any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra.
Some UTI symptoms include:
- Blood in urine
- Feeling tired, shaky or confused
- Fever
- Foul-smelling urine
- Frequent urination
- Painful urination (including a burning sensation)
- Pressure in the lower abdomen
- Urine that looks dark, milky or cloudy
Fortunately, UTIs are easily treated with antibiotics, but it’s important to diagnose your infection before it spreads or causes serious complications.
Be sure to schedule an appointment with your doctor if you experience any of these common UTI symptoms in women.
