NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., September 3, 2018 Florida Hospital New Smyrna has been named as a Screening Center of Excellence by the Lung Cancer Alliance for the hospitals ongoing commitment to responsible lung cancer screening.

Florida Hospital New Smyrna joins Florida Hospital DeLand in DeLand, Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City, Florida Hospital Flagler in Palm Coast, Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach, and Florida Hospital Waterman in Tavares in earning this designation.

We are proud and honored to be working with Florida Hospital as a Lung Cancer Alliance Screening Center of Excellence. Their commitment to practice responsible lung cancer screening will lead to advancements in research and many lives saved. They are an example to follow, said Laurie Fenton Ambrose, Lung Cancer Alliance president and CEO.

Less than 40 hospitals in the entire state of Florida have earned this status.

Low dose CT screening for lung cancer carried out safely, efficiently and equitably saves tens of thousands of lives a year.

As Screening Centers of Excellence, all Florida Hospital locations throughout Volusia, Flagler and Lake counties have been recognized for their commitment to providing clear information based on current evidence for those who are candidates for lung cancer screening. Additionally, these facilities comply with comprehensive standards based on best practices developed by professional bodies such as the American College of Radiology (ACR), the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP) for controlling screening quality, radiation dose and diagnostic procedures within an experienced, multi-disciplinary clinical setting.

Im so proud of the team at Florida Hospital New Smyrna for working hard to earn this designation, said Ken Mattison, Florida Hospital New Smyrna CEO. Across all of our hospitals in the area, we are dedicated to providing patients with the highest quality care. Low dose CT screening has shown to be the only proven method to detect lung cancer at an early and treatable stage. We are thrilled to be part of this elite group, setting an example for responsible screening practices across the country.
