NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., November 2, 2018 – Florida Hospital New Smyrna recently recognized three volunteers with the Starfish Award. This award recognizes team members that are not nurses, but still provide impactful, compassionate patient care.
Amber Hudson is a Cozy Cart volunteer, rounding on the hospital units and offering refreshments and reading materials to patients and visitors. Hudson consistently receives compliments on her ability to engage patients and visitors during her rounds providing patients and visitors refreshments in their rooms.
“Amber lights up the room. She made me smile when I was crying,” one patient wrote in nomination of Hudson. “She has a special way of helping others and is a blessing from heaven.”
Volunteers Tom and Peg Walter are members of the Florida Hospital New Smyrna Auxiliary board of directors and serve as the emergency department co-chairpersons. In this role, they are responsible for scheduling, training, leading other volunteers in the emergency department.
“Although illness has limited their amount of participation in the Emergency Department, we are blessed to have this partnership transfer to the Family Waiting Room,” said Stephen Kenney President Florida Hospital New Smyrna Auxiliary. “Both Tom and Peg are meant to be here! They have been a strength for our patients.”
Peg was nominated after helping a young patient navigate the various assistance programs available in the area, offering direction on where to go and how to get there, all while providing a shoulder to lean on.
Tom was nominated after supporting a man as his wife underwent treatment, offering a friendly face and coffee to ease his worries while he waited.
