VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla., July 18, 2018 Florida Hospital has selected Shawn Zaicek as director of radiation oncology operations. Zaicek will initially serve in this capacity at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City and Florida Hospital DeLand in DeLand. In 2019, the role will expand to include Florida Hospital New Smyrna in New Smyrna Beach.

Radiation oncology is one of the three primary specialties involved in treating cancer; the other two are surgical and medical oncology. Radiation oncology uses high energy beams, or x-rays, to target and kill cancer cells. Using a machine called a linear accelerator, radiation therapy fights cancer by damaging the DNA of cancer cells while sparing as much of the healthy cells as possible. Although it depends on the patients' individual needs, radiation therapy is typically delivered five days a week over the course of several weeks.

In this new role, Zaicek will be responsible for managing radiation oncology operations and improving processes for all clinical operations while maintaining Florida Hospital's mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ

Zaicek has 14 years of experience in radiation oncology and has previously served as chief radiation therapist and departmental manager of radiation oncology at The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders in Fort Worth, Texas. He has also served as a clinical instructor of radiologic technology for Brookhaven College in Texas.

Most recently, Zaicek was the director of Keiser Universitys radiation therapy program in Melbourne, Florida. In this role, he was accountable for the overall processes and outcomes of the program, including the vision, planning, implementation, and evaluation.

A Lake Mary resident, Zaicek earned a Bachelor of Science in Radiation Therapy from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He is a Certified Radiation Therapist and Radiologic Technologist. Additionally, he is a member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
