An estimated 265,000 people – including men – in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Regular screenings and self-exams help detect cancer at earlier stages, which translates into improved survival rates, according to Lisa Minton, MD, a general surgeon who specializes in breast care at AdventHealth Medical Group in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Dr. Minton joined Wes Walker, MD, director of genomics and personalized health at AdventHealth, for an episode of the Inspiring Wholeness podcast, a partnership between AdventHealth and the Orlando Business Journal to discuss some breakthroughs in breast cancer research. Also included in the timely discussion – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – is the role of genomic testing in personalized medicine as well as preventive measures.
