NEW SMYRNA, Fla., November 21, 2018 – Nearly 60 community members attended a free community luncheon on Nov. 14 at Florida Hospital New Smyrna.

Led by New Smyrna Beach’s newest orthopedic surgeon Dr. William Browning III, guests learned about the anatomy of the hip, causes of pain and treatment options, as well as what to expect after surgery.

“Over 70 million people in the U.S. have some form of arthritis,” said Browning. “Osteoarthritis is one of the most common types. It is degenerative condition caused by cartilage breakdown and subsequent bony changes to joints.”

During the seminar, Browning explained that although joint changes are irreversible, there are options to help ease the pain, such as weight loss, physical therapy, and medications. Surgical interventions include less invasive procedures or a total hip replacement.

“If a hip replacement is necessary to better someone’s quality of life, there are two approach options: traditional and anterior,” Browning said. “The traditional approach cuts the muscles and tendons and has been shown to have a longer recovery, where the anterior approach is tissue-sparing and does not cut the tissues. It helps to stabilize the new joint immediately and allows for a faster recovery with less pain.”

With the anterior approach to a hip replacement, an incision is made on the front of the leg rather than the side or back. This allows a surgeon to work between muscles and tissues without detaching them from the hip or thighbones. This approach is the latest in hip replacements and uses a high-tech table and intra-operative x-ray for precise positioning of the new joint.

“Early diagnosis and the course of treatment for osteoarthritis is important,” Browning concluded. “Your surgeon can help you decide on the best course of treatment and if you need a total hip replacement, they will help choose the right approach and implant for you.”
