As 2017 comes to an end, we put together a brief roundup of everything we accomplished at the Florida Hospital Nicholson Center. From hosting surgical device debuts to adding to the hands-on approach we take for our educational courses, we worked hard to establish ourselves as a one-stop medical training facility.

NEW PARTNERSHIPS AND DEBUTS

The partnerships and relationships we continued to build in 2017 have helped us continue to provide our visiting surgeons with the ability to train on the latest and best robotic technology available. Here’s a timeline breakdown of a few of the partners we worked with in new ways in 2017:

  • June 2017: The da Vinci X surgical system made its United States debut at the Nicholson Center in part of a system showcase event through Intuitive Surgical
  • August 2017: Nicholson Center received the first commercial unit of the Senhance Surgical System for pre-FDA approval and commercialization and will serve as the first US training center for TransEnterix
  • September 2017: Nicholson Center received the world’s first installation of the SPORT Surgical System for pre-clinical feasibility and validation studies from Titan Medical

NEW MEDICAL TRAINING COURSES

In July, we partnered with STAN Institute to launch a comprehensive robotic surgery training curriculum. The basic robotic surgical course is offered internationally and is a significant move toward having standardized robotic surgery training curricula worldwide. In fact, we just wrapped up our 5-Day Basic Robotic Surgical Course in November. Our courses provide a blended training experience and incorporate interactive features, like our cadaver labs, into more traditional medical training courses. Along with our Basic Robotic Surgical Course, we developed eleven of our own educational courses. Between our own educational events and our industry held events, the Nicholson Center has hosted over 16,000 medical professionals this year, and utilized over 900 lab stations.

STAFF ADDITIONS

In an effort to broaden our educational program, we brought on Todd Larson, RN, BSN, MSIT, CNOR as the director of education and training and Scott Magnuson, MD as our Chief Medical Officer. Dr. Magnuson served as Chief Medical Officer at Florida Hospital Celebration Health prior to joining our team. Apart from his work at our facility, Dr. Magnuson serves as the Medical Director of Head and Neck Surgery at Florida Hospital Celebration Health and shares his experience as Professor of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine.

Todd has worked in the medical field for 38 years before joining us, and his previous role was as vice president and chief clinical officer at Mimic. He’s working to implement a hands-on approach to every appropriate training service we offer, further separating our first-class education from other institutes.

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

With training evolving and moving to a more digital focus, our audio visual team created a mobile broadcast solution, the B-Hive. Our B-Hive is an adaptable mobile broadcast hardware that allows for a unique and customized learning experience. The B-Hive combines video conferencing with advanced surgical training on a mass scale, designed to provide both practicing and upcoming surgeons with a user friendly, visual education platform for new medical devices and procedures.
