In their third match of this year’s FC Series, Manager Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City will head to Central Florida to face his former club, Barcelona, at Camping World Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm ET on July 30, 2024.
It stands to be a highly competitive match: The teams have faced off in competitive play four times since 2012, with each team picking up two wins and two losses.
Former soccer pro and AdventHealth SportsPFX Program Manager Russell Gaither has an inside look at how these teams will show up in the match, as well as professional insight into what factors are impacting the players’ health.
Barcelona's Tactical Approach and Key Players
Gaither says Barcelona will likely emphasize ball possession, high pressing and quick transitions. They’ll aim to control the midfield and use their technical prowess to break down Manchester City's defense. The use of width will be crucial, with fullbacks and wingers looking to stretch the play and create spaces for their attackers.
Key Players:
The preseason will come in handy for Barcelona’s newly appointed manager, Hansi Flick, who has yet to oversee a game at the club. He will be dependent on some of his key players to help him get his tenure off to a good start.
- Marc-André ter Stegen (Goalkeeper): A reliable shot-stopper and key presence in defense
- Robert Lewandowski (Forward): One of the greatest goal-scorers in the world
Manchester City's Tactical Approach and Key Players
Manchester City will look to dominate possession and implement their high pressing game, says Gaither. They’ll focus on quick ball circulation and exploiting spaces with their fluid attacking movements. City's fullbacks will likely push high up the pitch to support the attack and create overloads.
Key Players:
The preseason will also be an important time for arguably the greatest manager in world football, Pep Guardiola. Renowned for his innovative tactics and meticulous preparation, he will continue to elevate Manchester City with his emphasis on possession-based football and relentless pressing.
- Ederson (Goalkeeper): Known for his exceptional shot-stopping abilities and distribution skills
- Erling Haaland (Forward): A prolific striker with an eye for goal
- Jack Grealish (Midfielder): A skillful playmaker who can unlock defenses
Health and Fitness Considerations
Barcelona's health and fitness will be tested by their preseason schedule and the travel involved. Gaither explains that the Catalan side will need to manage the physical demands of playing in different climates and time zones, which could affect their performance. Plus, any lingering injuries or fitness concerns could impact their ability to field their strongest lineup.
Manchester City will also face challenges related to travel and preseason preparations. The English side will need to adapt to the heat and humidity, which could affect their high-intensity pressing game. Injuries or lack of match fitness for key players may also play a role in determining their performance levels.
Both teams will need to carefully manage their squads in their first preseason test to ensure optimal performance leading into the season, taking into account the physical and mental fatigue associated with preseason tours.
