Summertime in Central Florida tops travelers' lists for proximity to beaches, theme parks and warm weather. And we want all of you to make wonderful memories. With just a little planning, you can have a great time in Central Florida’s world-famous destinations and experience everything you’ve always dreamed about.
Strategies to Avoid Heat-Related Illnesses
With our well-known hot, humid weather in Central Florida in summer, illnesses like heatstroke, sunburn and dehydration are possible but avoidable when you follow the right steps. While having fun in the sun, watch everyone in your party—including yourself—and be aware of the signs and symptoms to prevent a delay in your joy.
Heatstroke
What is heatstroke? Heatstroke is a condition caused by the body overheating, usually due to physical activity in high temperatures without drinking enough water. Heatstroke requires emergency care. Without treatment, it can cause damage to the heart, brain, heart, muscles and kidneys. Protect yourself and your family from heatstroke by paying attention to these symptoms:
- A body temperature of 104° F or higher
- Hallucinations
- Headaches, confusion or trouble thinking clearly
- Muscle cramps or weakness
- Skin redness and warmth
- Vomiting or diarrhea
If you notice these heatstroke warning signs, move to the shade or seek out air conditioning. In Central Florida's theme parks, you can always find AC in retail stores, pavilions and restaurants. Drink water and seek medical help right away.
Pro tip: Stock up on essentials like cooling towels, large-brimmed hats and battery-operated misting fans. Meet the outdoors wearing loose-fitting, moisture-wicking athletic shirts in light colors. Don't choose a regular T-shirt that can get warm and retain sweat. Choose comfortable, breathable shoes.
Sunburn
We understand it can be easy to forget your sunscreen, especially on cloudy days. But just because you can’t see the sun doesn’t mean it isn’t just as powerful. The UV rays that cause sunburn are invisible and as risky on cloudy days as on sunny days. Recognize sunburn by reddened skin, pain, swelling or blisters. Follow these tips to stay sunburn-free:
- Apply sunscreen every day.
- Reapply sunscreen often when you’re outdoors.
- Use enough sunscreen and apply it everywhere.
- Wear sun-protective clothing, including hats and sunglasses.

Pro tip: Invest in a UV-reflective umbrella, making outdoor temperatures seem ten degrees Fahrenheit cooler when underneath.
Dehydration
Summers in Florida tend to be wet, which can trick your body into thinking it’s not thirsty, so you’ll still need to prioritize staying hydrated. In the Florida summer humidity, you can sweat much more than you might at home, and dehydration can sneak up on you.
Dehydration can be serious, so watch out for the symptoms: If you notice dizziness, flushing and weakness, move indoors or to a shady area and lie down. Drink lots of fluids and seek first aid. If the person experiencing dehydration doesn’t seem to improve, consider visiting the nearest emergency department.
Pro Tip: It takes a little time to acclimate to different temperatures and humidity levels than you might have at home, so giving yourself some grace is a good idea. Move a little slower. Take time to cool off. Keep water-filled snacks on hand, such as watermelon, cucumbers, pineapple, tomatoes and celery, which can contain up to 85% water.
A Theme Park Plan of Action
You can maximize your fun if you stop to think about when you do things, especially in the theme parks. For example, many people take a break from the parks during the hottest part of the day and return to the resort. Rest will give you and your family more energy for evenings in the park — and it’ll be cooler.
Try to do your shopping and indoor dark rides during the day. That'll give you more time in the air conditioning and can put you outside for parades and fireworks. Evenings are also the best time to book outdoor shows so you can enjoy them without the sun beating down on you.
Pro tip: Ice water is free in all the Central Florida theme parks. Ask at any quick service location or any kiosk with a soda fountain.
Give you and your family plenty of time between meals and rides. Avoid eating a heavy meal at lunchtime; hot weather can mix poorly with an overly full stomach. Lastly, grab some powder or an anti-chafing stick to avoid heat rashes.
