Dr. Victor Herrera has been appointed as the chief clinical officer for AdventHealth’s Central Florida Division – South Region. He will oversee the clinical operations and quality of care for the region’s 10 hospitals and more than 2,000 physicians.
“One of our top priorities is planning for the explosive growth Central Florida continues to experience,” Herrera said. “We have a responsibility to care for our community, and as that community grows, we’re going to have to add additional access points for care as well as increase our workforce of caregivers to make sure we continue to live up to that responsibility.”
In addition to his clinical background, Herrera is a champion of using technology to help relieve clinicians from the burden of repetitive tasks to free them up to focus on making medical decisions and to provide a better patient experience.
“As technology improves and becomes more available, we can leverage artificial intelligence and big data to automate tedious tasks, allowing doctors and nurses to spend more meaningful time with their patients,” Herrera said. “Not only can this make for a better patient experience, it can make for a better work experience for our teams as well as help standardize care and reduce costs.”
Dr. Herrera has been with AdventHealth for over 10 years. He previously served as the vice president and chief medical officer for AdventHealth Orlando, the flagship hospital of the AdventHealth system and as the assistant director of the AdventHealth Department of Graduate Medical Education and Internal Medicine Residency Program, where he mentored and trained the next generation of physicians.
“Dr. Herrera is a visionary leader who has a passion for excellence and innovation in health care. He has been instrumental in advancing our clinical quality, safety, and outcomes across our region,” said Brian Adams, CEO of AdventHealth Central Florida – South Region. “I am confident that he will continue to elevate our standards of care and inspire our teams to deliver whole-person care to our communities.”
Dr. Herrera received his medical degree from Universidad del Norte in Colombia, completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital, and completed dual fellowships in clinical immunology and infectious diseases at the University of Miami and Stanford University, respectively.
He succeeds Dr. Neil Finkler, who retired earlier this year after serving as the chief clinical officer for AdventHealth Central Florida since 2016.
