AdventHealth’s Mobile Mammography Team Brings Mammograms to Patients

The statistics are staggering: one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. However, advances in technology have allowed for cancers to become more treatable and beatable when caught early.

In 2019, AdventHealth’s West Florida Division invested in three mobile mammography units to make cancer screenings more available for patients throughout Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, and Polk counties.

“One of the largest impacts I have seen is that women who may not usually be compliant to getting an annual mammogram have become more compliant because we’re able to come to them,” said Genia Sutton, Director of Outpatient Imaging, AdventHealth West Florida Division. “It’s amazing to see women getting their first mammogram on our buses because of the convenience of going to locations within their community.”

From schools, to churches, to grocery stores, the mobile mammography unit has been critical in removing barriers to care throughout the Tampa Bay region. And its team members have become resources to women in the community.

“Our care navigation team is there to support our patients after their mammogram,” said Sutton. “In the case of requiring more imaging, we make sure our patients are not left alone and that their care is coordinated every step of the way.”

What To Expect, Safety During COVID-19

COVID-19 concerns have caused many to put off annual screenings. However, AdventHealth’s Mobile Mammography unit eliminates the waiting room and minimizes exposure risk. The unit is a 45-foot clinic on wheels, used by one patient at a time, and uses state-of-the-art digital technology that is both FDA approved and ACR certified.

  • Patients will be screened outside of the bus prior to entering
  • Unit is cleaned and sanitized using hospital protocols
  • Appointments can be as quick as 10 minutes
  • No additional fee for 3D mammography
  • Most major insurance plans accepted
