Sept. 27, 2022; HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. – AdventHealth is excited to welcome Douglas Thompson, MD as its new Medical Director for Hematology and Oncology. Dr. Thompson is board-certified in Hematology and Oncology and focuses on providing compassionate, patient-centered care. Along with leading the Cancer Services program across four locations in Western North Carolina, Dr. Thompson is welcoming new patients at AdventHealth Hematology Oncology Infusion Services Hendersonville.
Dr. Thompson earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC and his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA. He went on to complete his residency in Internal Medicine from Emory University and his Fellowship in Hematology/Oncology from Brody School of Medicine East Carolina University in Greenville, NC.
Dr. Thompson originally started out practicing as an internist. However, his passion to help cancer patients let him to go back to specialize in hematology and oncology. His approach with each patient is truly one of compassion and honesty. “Telling a patient that he or she has cancer is very difficult and stressful for both the patient and family,” Dr. Thompson says, “I try to balance compassion and hope with information, prognosis and treatment options. Above all, my approach is to be honest and forthright. Even if they don’t understand everything about their treatment, they have to feel that their physician is going to be honest with them even when that may be to give them difficult news.”
AdventHealth’s patient-centered care and collaborative approach to health care is what drew Dr. Thompson to join the team. He adds, “Treating cancer ‘takes a village.’ It is a team approach where many different specialties and personnel are needed to provide care to the body, mind and spirit of a patient. I recognize that my role as the medical oncologist is to help facilitate and guide the patient to their complete care to feel whole; however, I can't do that alone. I need the help and support of many others. AdventHealth has that excellent team and I feel confident my patients and I will have that support here.”
“Dr. Thompson is that incredible blend of a compassionate physician and driven scientist always seeking out new research, treatments and options for his patients,” shared Christy Sneller, MBA, Vice President of Physician Services and Chief Practice Officer for AdventHealth Hendersonville. “He sees the value of providing a team for patients living with a cancer diagnosis and works to empower the team members to be the best in each of their roles to help the patient feel whole.”
Dr. Thompson is excited to join the team at AdventHealth Hendersonville. “My goal is to become part of the community of Hendersonville where I can make a difference for patients and their families.”
When Dr. Thompson is not caring for patients, he is an avid runner. He has completed marathons in all 50 states, on all seven continents, and even at the North Pole. He is especially happy when he can combine his love for running with his love for travel and has enjoyed running across the Atacama Desert of Chile, the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, and most recently running across the jungle island of Dominica.
