MERRIAM, Kan. – AdventHealth Shawnee Mission will soon begin work on a new 71,000 square foot, three-story Cancer Center. The new building will be entirely dedicated to cancer care, helping accommodate the anticipated need for more than twice as many patients to be served by 2030.

The new AdventHealth Cancer Center Shawnee Mission will offer care for every step of a patient’s cancer journey – from prevention, to diagnosis, to treatment, to follow up appointments. The Cancer Center will include new specially designed spaces for radiation oncology, infusion therapies, lab, pharmacy, rehabilitation services and provider clinics. The building will also house AdventHealth’s Diagnostic Breast Center, a regional destination for mammography.

“Almost all of us have been impacted by cancer, either having been diagnosed ourselves or supporting our family and friends who are battling the disease,” said AdventHealth Shawnee Mission President Michael Knecht. “We have designed this Cancer Center as if our own family members were being treated there, and the result is a space that is beautiful and nurturing for patients and promotes efficiency and collaboration amongst clinicians.”

The Cancer Center design integrates nature throughout the interior and exterior, incorporating window-facing infusion bays and natural light throughout, and includes a dedicated outdoor terrace available for patients and their families.

“Our patients often tell us that cancer treatment at AdventHealth is just different,” said Brenda Shoup, MD, gynecologic oncologist. “They appreciate that we offer clinical expertise and advanced treatment options and are conveniently located and easy to access. We also provide care for more than just their cancer, but their mind and spirit as well. We know having cancer is stressful but treating it shouldn’t be.”

The AdventHealth Cancer Center is currently located in a medical office building on the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission campus. The new building will more than triple the current space and will allow for new efficiencies, including significantly reduced lab waits so chemotherapy can begin more quickly. The Cancer Center will also offer additional clinical trials.

AdventHealth partnered with Hoefer Welker on architectural design and MEP engineering, Henderson Engineers, Renaissance Infrastructure Consulting on civil engineering, and Bob D. Campbell and Company on structural engineering. Site work will begin in July 2022 with an official groundbreaking taking place in October 2022.

The AdventHealth Kansas City Foundation has launched a fundraising campaign to support the new Cancer Center and move cancer care forward in Kansas City. Community philanthropy is needed to support the new Cancer Center construction, as well as provide advanced cancer care technology not available anywhere else in the region.
