MERRIAM, Kan., — The B.E. Smith Family Center recently completed the expansion of its interior spaces, bringing more resources and spaces to families of the Britain Development program.
“When the B.E. Smith Family Center opened in 2019 space was shelled but not completed with the goal of future expansion to meet the growing needs of the program,” said Amy Milroy, director of the B.E. Smith Family Center. “The entire project was funded by proceeds from AdventHealth Kansas City Foundation’s gala, Tiny Tim Holiday Fantasy, which raises more than $1.1 million annually. We are proud to provide this space for our families and are grateful for so many compassionate donors who made this expansion possible.”
B.E. Smith Family Center houses the Britain Development and Early Learning programs, providing therapy and education for children with special needs and Christian-based childcare for children of AdventHealth team members and physicians. With the completion of this expansion, the B.E. Smith Family Center has added the following:
- New medical services room for in-house nurse and physician
- Relocated and renovated family respite space
- Relocated and renovated baby/toddler therapy group room
- Relocated administrative offices and training room with new technology for video conferencing
- Additional preschool classroom
- Three new therapy rooms, including speech therapy, occupational therapy, and a multisensory environment space
- New vending machines
Britain Development, an outreach program of AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, has provided therapeutic treatment and education to more than 5,000 children with special needs since the program began in 1972. As part of the program, individualized programs are shaped for each child and family by a team of physical, occupational, and music therapists, as well as speech language pathologists, early childhood special education teachers, behavior analysts, social workers, and paraprofessionals.
