AdventHealth Tampa Welcomes First Class of Internal Medicine Residency Students

AdventHealth Tampa is preparing to welcome its inaugural class into the graduate medical education program in internal medicine at the flagship hospital of AdventHealth West Florida Division. The nationwide Match Day today, March 17, 2023, for fourth-year medical students, placed 13 aspiring physicians into the program at Tampa. Students will begin residency in July, rotating through several hospital departments under the supervision of board-certified AdventHealth physicians at AdventHealth Tampa and AdventHealth Medical Group over the course of the next three to seven years.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to influence the next generation of doctors,” says Douglas Ross, MD, Chief Medical Officer at AdventHealth Tampa. “The clinical learning environment shapes future behaviors and practice patterns for decades, which is why we’ve been hard at work building our own program to teach clinical expertise and our brand of whole person care.”

The residency program also addresses the growing nationwide physician shortage, which according to the American Association of Medical College, will reach a shortfall of 139,000 doctors by 2033.

“Adding more graduate medical education opportunities like ours at AdventHealth Tampa, will provide more access to training on the west coast of Florida and ensure future generations of exceptional care in our communities,” said Aftab Ahmed, MD, founding program director for the internal medicine residency program at AdventHealth Tampa.

The Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved AdventHealth Tampa’s internal medicine GME program in fall 2022. Future programs are planned for OB/GYN, general surgery, cardiology and gastroenterology in the years to follow. The hospital will have more than 100 residents by 2028, making it a designated statutory teaching hospital. AdventHealth Sebring also has family medicine and internal medicine residency programs.
