Central Florida North, — As part of our ongoing Facebook Live series, the AdventHealth Morning Briefing, physicians with the AdventHealth Transplant Institute talked about COVID-19’s impact on organ transplants.
The AdventHealth Transplant Institute is the only transplant center in Central Florida and receives organ donations from all over the country. During the pandemic, they remained busy with nearly 60 heart, lung, kidney, liver and pancreas transplants conducted.
Dr. Nirav Raval, medical director of thoracic transplant, and Dr. Bobby Nibhanupudy, medical director of abdominal transplant, shared insights on how their work quickly adjusted and kept a steady pace during the COVID-19 crisis. Highlights of their discussion include:
The Institute’s mission to provide critical medical care to those who need it most was not comprised by COVID-19. The Institute was able to quickly adjust its operations to put enhanced safety measures in place, as well as screen all donors and transplant recipients to ensure they were COVID-negative.
Innovations in telehealth have helped with continuing to care for transplant patients after surgery and are another way to receive medical care in a prompt and socially distanced manner.
