NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla., October 12, 2017 Florida Hospital New Smyrna recognized oncology coordinator Tammy Cory with the Starfish Award, which recognizes employees that are not nurses, but still provide impactful, compassionate patient care. She was nominated by a patient. Getting a cancer diagnosis is very scary. For me, she was like an angel that God gave me to get through this scary time, the patient wrote on the nomination form. She is kind, steady, and excellent listener, and wonderful, nurturing advocate for me Her concern for my wellbeing is extraordinary! She helps me with my emotional, financial, medical and family problems - and always finds a solution! Jennifer Garthwaite, Florida Hospital New Smyrna oncology manager, shares a similar sentiment. The desire to strongly work in a patient centered way, but to do so with compassion and empathy, as well as competence, is a rare gift. Through personal drive and interest, Tammy built a critical component of our oncology practice on her own, Garthwaite said. Our patients have the utmost respect for the honesty and hard work that Tammy performs daily without hesitation. Her ability to multitask, anchored by her friendly and helpful disposition, makes her a worthy recipient of the Starfish Award.
