February is Heart Month, the perfect time to focus on your heart health. Family Medicine Physician, Dr. Chad Maurer with AdventHealth Medical Group Primary Care at Lafayette and AdventHealth Avista, shares six simple, heart-healthy tips to incorporate into your everyday life.
1. Embrace Heart-Healthy Foods
One of the most effective ways to improve overall heart health is by incorporating heart-healthy foods into your diet. Colorful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins like fish, as well as legumes, nuts, and healthy fats like avocados, are all excellent choices. These foods provide essential nutrients that support heart function and overall well-being.
2. Stay Active
Regular physical activity is crucial for maintaining a healthy heart. Dr. Maurer recommends aiming for at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity per week, with sessions lasting at least 10 minutes at a time. Whether it's a brisk walk, a bike ride, or a dance class, finding an activity you enjoy can make it easier to stay consistent.
3. Manage Stress and Prioritize Self-Care
Taking care of your whole self, mind, body and spirit, is essential for heart health. This includes finding ways to manage stress, maintaining consistent and quality sleep, engaging in regular health check-ups, and taking time for self-care. Consider adding time to meditate, deep breathing, or find a relaxing hobby to help you reduce stress every day.
4. Limit Alcohol and Eliminate Tobacco
Limiting alcohol consumption and eliminating tobacco use are critical steps in protecting your heart. Both alcohol and tobacco can have detrimental effects on heart health, so it's important to be mindful of your intake and seek support if needed.
5. Consider Your Coffee Habits
Recent studies suggest that drinking 2-3 cups of coffee a day may lead to a decrease in cardiovascular-related mortality causes, but only if consumed in the morning. The benefit was not seen in afternoon coffee consumption. However, it's important to weigh this against your personal risk factors for caffeine.
6. Start Small and Stay Consistent
Making small, manageable changes is key to long-term success. Dr. Maurer advises starting with something easy, like 3-5 minutes of activity per day, and gradually building a consistent pattern that works for you. Remember, the most important step is to start.
