AdventHealth Littleton kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month in a big way. On October 1, visitors to the AdventHealth Littleton Breast Care Center were surprised with food, massages, swag bags, and more. The event was meant to celebrate patients for taking the time to schedule their annual mammogram. It is recommended women get mammograms starting at age 40.

Michele Gwin knows the importance of annual exams. Her grandmother had breast cancer, which is why she never misses getting her mammogram. She was thrilled to be able to get it done at AdventHealth Littleton’s Breast Care Center on the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“They found a lump during my very first mammogram. Luckily, it was not cancer, but I would never miss an annual exam,” said Michele. “It’s so important to get screened, I always tell my friends, just do it. As scared as I was after my first mammogram, it’s better to know and get treated.”

One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. By getting regular mammograms, providers can detect breast cancer in the early stages when it is easier to treat. That improves the chances for overall survival with the least amount of long-term side effects.

“We tend to avoid things that aren’t fun, so we hope that by turning an annual screening into a party, we will encourage others in the community to learn the process really isn’t that bad,” said organizer and oncology nurse navigator, Kathy Creecy, RN. “We have an amazing staff at the Breast Care Center who are always positive and supportive. So even if people couldn’t attend our event, know they will do everything to make your experience the best possible.”
