Dr. Chetan Patel, Medical Director of the Spine Health Institute in Altamonte Springs, Fla., was recently named Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (NMM) “Preceptor of the Year” by Florida Hospital East Orlando. He received this honor on June 26, 2016 at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando. Robyn Young, DO, presented the award and commended Dr. Patel’s leadership and teaching abilities.

“Dr. Chetan Patel has enthusiastically taken our residents for two- and four-week rotations at The Spine Health Institute,” she said. “On their rotations, our residents have been involved directly with patient care, and have been strongly encouraged to reason using osteopathic principles and practices.”

The “Preceptor of the Year” award is given to physicians in the preceptor program who have gone above and beyond to make sure that medical residents are thoroughly prepared to provide excellent care in their field of practice. Residents in the program nominate their favorite preceptors, and a selection committee evaluates the candidates and awards them based on certain qualifications.

“Residents tell me that Dr. Patel has a knack for explaining pathology of the spine, radiology images and physical examination techniques,” Dr. Young said. “During surgeries, he keeps residents directly involved. We all feel like we are better physicians after leaving his office. We consider him an advocate for the DO profession, and a wonderful example for attending physicians everywhere.”

Dr. Patel is a world-renowned spine specialist, researcher and educator who is passionate about improving patient outcomes. He is at the forefront of emerging technology and spreads this knowledge by teaching hundreds of spine surgeons about the latest devices and techniques that can help improve patient outcomes, including a new robotic technology that he helped develop which will soon be used in spine surgeries. Dr. Patel believes in teaching residents that medicine isn’t just about treating the condition, it’s about caring for the patient and improving each person’s quality of life.

“It is fulfilling to know that being passionate about teaching others and making sure their patients get the best care possible is recognized,” Dr. Patel said.
