As a pioneering spine surgeon who has devoted much of his career to identifying new methods and tools for improving patient outcomes in spine surgery, Dr. Patel is a recognized expert on robotic applications in the operating room. Indeed, he has chaired the North American Spine Society’s Section on Robotics and Navigation since 2012 and recently participated in the first successful live clinical trial of an innovative robotic operating platform that he helped to develop in Switzerland.

Further cementing Dr. Patel’s position as an international authority on the use of robotics in spine surgery is his newly published article, co-authored with Dr. Bawarjan Schatlo in Germany, now appearing in the January edition of the North American Spine Society’s SpineLine peer-reviewed scientific journal. In the article, Dr. Patel and Dr. Schatlo provide a definitive overview of current and potential uses of robotic-assisted devices in spine surgery, along with a candid discussion of some of the concerns and challenges involved in bringing this technology to bear in operating rooms nationwide.

Without a doubt, this featured article – appearing in one of the most influential journals for spine surgeons around the globe – marks an exciting moment for the Spine Health Institute and our innovative Medical Director, Dr. Chetan Patel. We congratulate him on this latest achievement and invite you to read his article on Robotic Spine Surgery in the latest edition of SpineLine.
