Living with chronic back pain can be stressful and frustrating, especially when you aren’t comfortable asking others for help. Having the right support during this difficult time can help reduce your stress and aid in your recovery by soothing the mind, body and spirit. With this in mind, the fifth pillar of the CREATION Health model is “Trust” – which doesn’t exactly come easy for many people when it comes to their medical needs. Here are a few ways to boost your trust in others in order to improve your health and wellbeing:

1) Research your doctor

Before committing to a specific physician for your treatment, do some research and maybe even meet with the doctor and his or her team. When you’re comfortable with your healthcare provider, you’re more likely to trust his or her opinion and treatment recommendations. And having trust in your doctor means you can openly communicate any concerns you have at every stage of treatment, thereby improving your chances for optimal results.

2) Be open with those you care about

Having a strong support system is vital during your healing process, which is why we highly recommend having a family member, friend or partner with you when you attend appointments or undergo treatment. Your support person, or “coach” as we like to call this person, will help keep track of medical information and discuss any personal concerns you may have along the way.Talk with your doctor about support programs that are available in your area – these are a great way to meet people and find the support and confidence you need to stay on the path to healing.

3) Find comfort in your faith

If you’re a spiritual or religious person, turning to your faith may help you find peace and clarity during stressful times. By placing your trust in a higher power, you can learn to let go of anxieties that may hinder your healing, and allow yourself to remain positive and calm. Have faith in your beliefs, your doctor and your family and friends – you’ll be amazed by the power of positivity!

Of course, like it or not, sometimes things are out of your control and you’ll need to rely on a professional who has your best interests in mind to ensure that you get the treatment that’s right for you and your quality of life. By placing your trust in the right people (including yourself), you can help lift the weight from your shoulders so you can focus on recovering, healing and keeping yourself healthy for years to come.

SO: find a doctor you can trust; recruit a friend or family member to keep track of your medical needs; communicate your concerns fully; take comfort in your faith - and try your best to maintain a positive outlook. All of these will help you build the trust that can nurture you throughout your healing process and throughout your lifetime.
