A-V Canal Defect

An AV canal defect is a heart defect that occurs in the womb during the earliest stages of heart development. This condition can refer to various abnormalities that occur in the heart’s center, from the most simple to the most severe. AV canal defects can and should be surgically repaired to avoid life-threatening consequences, with early intervention typically provided prior to a baby turning one year old. Without early treatment, heart failure, lung damage and stunted growth are likely to occur before most patients reach adulthood.
