Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a psychological condition that is characterized by major emotional swings in which a person goes from being extremely happy and full of energy to extremely depressed and lethargic very quickly. The American Psychiatric Association has published specific diagnostic criteria for the different forms of bipolar disorder and its variants. These pertain to the number and longevity of hypomanic and/or major depressive episodes and their related symptoms. Children and teenagers are diagnosed with the condition according to these same criteria. If you think you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of a bipolar disorder, it’s important to seek assistance from a medical professional. This is because, while periods of euphoria and high productivity can be very enjoyable, these will always precede a low period where severe symptoms can become extremely problematic for your work, finances or personal relationships.
