A comprehensive aging assessment is a detailed evaluation of an older person’s cognitive function, vision and hearing capabilities, memory, mobility, balance, emotional status, social and nutritional needs and more. Conducted by a trained primary care physician or geriatrician, such assessments can provide extremely valuable information regarding a senior’s health status and any assistance they may need to be able to live as independently, productively and comfortably as possible. Aging assessments can be particularly helpful for both patients and their caregivers following the occurrence of an adverse health event such as a broken bone, stroke or fall. Likewise, if an elderly person is considering relocating to an assisted living facility or other type of living arrangement, gaining an understanding of their current functional capabilities and requirements is essential.
