Dislocating Patella

A dislocating patella refers to the condition in which the bone that covers the knee joint slips out of place, usually due to a twisting or direct contact injury. This injury is not uncommon in children and young adults who participate in sports – especially females. It causes knee pain and knee instability leading to immobility, meaning someone whose kneecap has just been dislocated will not be able to walk. While the bone may slip back into place on its own, prompt medical treatment is recommended because of potential damage that this condition can cause to the knee joint.
