EGD Procedure

An esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is a diagnostic screening procedure that allows your physician to evaluate specific problems associated with the upper gastrointestinal tract, or UGI. With the use of a long, flexible tube called an endoscope, your physician is able to see inside the esophagus, stomach and the first section of the small intestine (duodenum). The EGD screening is highly effective in diagnosing functional problems and abnormalities of the UGI, and can also be used to treat those problems as part of the same procedure once they have been detected. Your physician may recommend an esophagogastroduodenoscopy if you have unexplained bleeding, polyps or other growths in the upper gastrointestinal tract that require removal, or if you have an esophageal stricture that needs to be dilated.
