The gallbladder is an important organ that helps digest fatty foods by releasing bile that the liver produces. Gallstones are the most common form of gallbladder disease and are often asymptomatic, but can at times produce severe discomfort. Another form of gallbladder dysfunction is called biliary dyskinesia, which is when the gallbladder cannot properly contract or is unable to empty itself of bile. While there appears to be a hereditary component to gallbladder disease, it is also not uncommon for a husband and wife to both suffer from this illness due to having the same diet. Women and those who are overweight are much more likely to develop gallstones. Treatments for gallbladder diseases will vary and may include medication, lifestyle adjustments and surgery.
