Infants tend to carry varying amounts of weight at different stages of development. In order to track and manage any weight issues, your baby's doctor will plot the child's growth on charts that keep track of height, weight, head circumference and body mass index (BMI). Referring to these charts, they will compare the baby’s growth with that of other infants of the same sex and age. There are many ways to help prevent the development of excess baby fat; for example, through close monitoring the mother’s weight during pregnancy, breast feeding for as long as possible, disallowing sugary drinks before six months of age, and experimenting with other ways to sooth the baby, instead of turning to breast milk or formula. Doctors will work with parents and family members to create an environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle and keeps babies at a healthy weight as they continue to grow and develop.
