Interventional radiology is a medical sub-specialty that requires advanced training in the use of image-guided and minimally invasive methods for detecting and treating diseases throughout the body. Physicians who specialize in this area receive five to six years of additional training following medical school. Their assistance is often required for the diagnosis and/or treatment of a wide variety of conditions affecting the vascular, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, pulmonary, genitourinary and central nervous systems. Such conditions range from primary and metastatic liver cancers to uterine fibroids, peripheral vascular disease and disorders of the bile ducts. Interventional radiologists work as part of a multidisciplinary team of physicians to provide the most comprehensive treatment options for their patients.
