Intrauterine Device (IUD) Placement

Our physicians can help women who choose an intrauterine device (IUD) for contraception by placing the device and educating patients about its use. The two types of IUD currently approved for use in this country are the ParaGard device and the Mirena device. ParaGard is a device that works by releasing copper ions that impact the motility of sperm and cause it to be recognized as a foreign substance that the body destroys. It can be left in place for up to 10 years. Mirena works by releasing the progestin hormone, which causes a thickening of the cervical mucus and stops sperm from getting through to the uterine lining. It can remain in place for up to five years. Your physician will thoroughly discuss the risks and benefits of each device and help you decide which kind may be right for you.
