Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) refers to a disturbance in the function of the gastrointestinal tract that causes chronic symptoms such as lower abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, and loose or more frequent bowel movements. While the symptoms of this disease can be quite painful, debilitating and inconvenient, it is not considered life-threatening. Factors that contribute to severe IBS symptoms include stress; a diet that has a high concentration of fatty, spicy or greasy foods; and the consumption of alcohol and/or caffeine. Depending on the specific disease process that is at work, medical management of IBS can include dietary modifications, stress management techniques, an exercise program and certain medications.
