Nail Disorders
Nail disorders and nail infections are common problems that can sometimes be indicators of a more serious condition. Infection, ingrown toenails, tumors and warts can all occur under or around the nail and may cause redness, swelling, bleeding, changes in nail color, thickening of the nail, separation of the nail from the surrounding skin and changes to the nail shape. These disorders may sometimes be avoided by keeping the nails trim and clean, and by avoiding habits like fingernail biting and thumb sucking. Since nail problems may indicate a more systemic health problem and are not likely to heal independently, you should consult a doctor for any changes to or pain around the nails.
