Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by weak and brittle bones that are easily broken, and it’s most commonly seen in older women. However, many men aged 50 and older also experience bone fractures due to osteoporosis. A precursor to osteoporosis is called osteopenia, which is a condition in which bone density is diminished but not yet to the degree that an osteoporosis diagnosis can be made. While usually without symptoms until a bone break occurs, osteoporosis can be detected with a Dexa scan or bone mineral density test. Effective treatments are available in the form of prescription medications, Vitamin D and calcium supplements, and lifestyle modifications such as smoking cessation and getting regular exercise.
