Ovarian Cysts and Masses

Most of the time, ovarian cysts are symptomless and will eventually disappear on their own. But a large ovarian cyst or mass may cause pain and other discomfort while putting pressure on a woman’s pelvic organs. Possible symptoms of an ovarian cyst include pelvic pain associated with the initiation or ending of a woman’s period, a feeling of fullness or pressure in the abdominal region, pain during bowel movements, pain that radiates from the pelvis to the lower back and thighs, urinary urgency and frequency, nausea and breast tenderness. Treatment for ovarian cysts may include birth control medication to reduce the likelihood of future cyst formation and surgery to remove a growing or symptomatic cyst.
