Hyperparathyroidism in children is caused by a hyperparathyroid gland that is overproducing hormones due to the enlargement of the gland or a benign or malignant growth on it. This excess hormone production results in a higher-than-normal level of calcium in the blood and/or a lower-than-necessary amount of calcium in the bones. While the condition may initially be without symptoms, bone and joint pain, kidney problems, stomach discomfort and abdominal pain may occur as other organs are impacted by it. While medication or surgical removal of an enlarged gland or tumor may be recommended, less severe cases may only require regular monitoring until symptoms become more substantial.
