Kidney infections (also known as pyelonephritis) usually develop over a period of a few hours to a couple of days. The severity of the infection can vary and may result in pain and discomfort in the side, fever, shivers or chills, weakness or fatigue, nausea and diarrhea. With children, a doctor should be contacted immediately so that treatment for the infection can be initiated early, thereby preventing further damage. Most kidney infections develop due to a urinary tract infection that goes untreated. Infections can be successfully treated within a few days to a few weeks with fluids, antibiotics and rest.
