Pediatric Kidney Injury

Kidney injuries in children can easily occur due to the lack of bone and muscle protection around the area, but most injuries tend to be minor. Motor accidents are the most common cause of kidney injuries in children, followed by falls, sports injuries and other trauma. Most kidney injuries do not require surgery and will heal with rest and over-the-counter pain medicine such as acetaminophen. If the kidney is damaged, surgery may be required to fix the injury, stop the bleeding and prevent further damage from occurring. The child will be closely watched in the ICU for a few days to make sure he or she doesn’t develop an infection or other complication.
