A potassium sensitivity test may be performed to help in the diagnosis of interstitial cystitis and other painful bladder disorders. Here, first water and then a potassium chloride solution is placed inside the bladder to see whether the bladder lining is normal. If it is normal, potassium ions will not be able to penetrate the bladder wall and the patient will not feel any different than when water was introduced to her bladder. However, if there is an abnormality, the potassium ions will penetrate the bladder lining and cause pain – at which point, your doctor can provide a “rescue” solution to reduce your discomfort.
