Evaluation and treatment of pregnancy loss is appropriate for women who have experienced more than one unexplained, spontaneous miscarriage – a condition called recurrent pregnancy loss or fetal loss syndrome. This may include testing for embryonic and genetic/chromosomal abnormalities, endocrine/hormonal abnormalities, anatomic abnormalities or blood defects, many of which can be treated to allow for a successful pregnancy. Diagnostic methods may include sonography, hysterosalpingography, cytogenetic studies, blood coagulation protein tests and MRI. Spontaneous pregnancy loss is most often attributable to a chromosome imbalance that has a low risk of recurrence in a later pregnancy. Even so, prospective parents should receive counseling about this risk as well as prenatal fetal screenings in a future pregnancy.
