When weakened or damaged tissues that support the rectum allow it to slip (prolapse) down into the anus, this condition may need to be addressed via laparoscopic rectopexy in order to alleviate symptoms such as rectal bleeding, pain and fecal incontinence. This operation can be performed through 3-5 “keyhole” incisions in the abdomen, with the surgeon employing special instruments and a tiny camera device to access and view the operating field. Typically, the surgeon will separate the rectum from surrounding structures and pull it back up into its normal position, then secure it in place using sutures or mesh. Another means of accomplishing rectal prolapse repair is via the perineum (area between the anus and scrotum) and is called perineal rectosigmoidectomy. Your physician will discuss your treatment options based on your specific condition and personal preferences.
