Thyroid cancer occurs when cells within the thyroid gland become abnormal and start multiplying at an accelerated rate. Symptoms of this form of cancer can include a lump or swelling in the neck, swallowing or breathing difficulties, coughing and hoarseness. While there is no known cause of thyroid cancer, effective treatments for it include surgical removal of the tumor or entire thyroid gland, radioactive iodine therapy and hormone therapy.
