Thyroid nodules are small lumps that form inside the thyroid gland at the base of the neck. They are usually benign and can appear in children or adults, typically without symptoms. However, when one or more nodules is large enough or positioned such that it causes difficulty with breathing or swallowing – or in the rare occasion in which a malignancy is detected – medical treatment with radioactive iodine, anti-thyroid medications and surgery may be recommended.
