Tourette Syndrome, sometimes referred to simply as “Tourette’s,” is a tic disorder characterized by involuntary vocalizations and movements. Physical tics displayed by Tourette syndrome patients may include rapid blinking, head bobbing and sudden movements of the arms, shoulders or neck, while vocal tics might include inappropriate exclamations of certain words, as well as hooting, grunting or other indistinguishable sounds. While no one knows what causes Tourette syndrome, a hereditary/genetic connection has been established. Many Tourette’s patients may have concurrent disorders such as ADHD, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, anxiety and depression. Treatment of Tourette Syndrome may include neuroleptic drugs to help suppress unwanted tics – though no specific medication can resolve the tics entirely.
