Trans-Urethral Resection of Prostate

Men who are suffering severe urinary symptoms associated with the condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) – also known as an enlarged prostate – may be candidates for a surgical procedure called trans-urethral resection of prostate, or TURP for short. During this surgery, the interior of the prostate gland is removed via a special instrument while the patient is under general or spinal anesthesia. A hospital stay of between one and three days may be required following this procedure while the patient has a temporary Foley catheter device to allow him to urinate and periodic bladder irrigation is performed to ensure against the formation of blood clots.
