Transurethral bulking injections are a potential treatment option for women who experience stress urinary incontinence. Following evaluation via urodynamic testing and cystoscopy to determine the reason for a patient’s involuntary leakage, a skin allergy test may be also be provided when collagen is the bulking agent that will be used. During the actual procedure, a local anesthetic is injected vaginally into the urethra. This can cause a temporary burning sensation but will then numb the area completely. Next, the bulking agent is injected into the wall of the urethra through a needle that is introduced via a cystoscope. The cystoscope has a tiny camera at the end that produces images you will be able to see on a computer monitor.
