When the testicles of a developing baby boy fail to move downward into the scrotum as they should prior to birth, this condition is known as undescended testicles. The issue may resolve itself by the time the child is two years old, but if not, a minimally invasive surgical procedure can be performed to address it. Prematurely born babies are at greatest risk for this disorder; other possible factors include inherited genes along with maternal health conditions such as alcohol use and cigarette smoking during pregnancy, diabetes and obesity, and parental exposure to certain pesticides.
