Vaginal sling surgery is a method of treating stress urinary incontinence that occurs in women due to weakened sphincter muscles that may be caused by pregnancy, vaginal childbirth or menopause. This minimally invasive, outpatient procedure involves wrapping the urethra and bladder neck with a “sling” or vaginal tape that provides extra support to the muscle when you strain it during a sneeze, laugh or cough. The sling material may be made of tissue from the patient’s own body; donated from a cadaver, pig or cow; or made of a synthetic mesh material. Your doctor will discuss which type of sling may work best for you. For many patients, the procedure greatly reduces the incidence of urinary leakage, letting them get back to a more normal and comfortable lifestyle.
