Ventral Hernia Repair
Ventral hernias often appear in locations within the abdomen where a previous surgery has taken place and weakened muscles have allowed a bulge or tear to occur in the abdominal wall at the point of an earlier incision. Surgical repair of a ventral hernia may be accomplished via open or laparoscopic method. Specially trained surgeons can offer the laparoscopic approach as a minimally invasive alternative that allows for a quicker recovery time, shorter hospital stay and less post-operative pain than the traditional procedure. With the patient under general anesthesia, a laproscope with a tiny camera at the end and other instruments are introduced via very small surgical incisions. Scar tissue is then removed and a surgical mesh is applied to the abdominal wall beneath the hernia. The instruments are then removed and incisions closed.
