If you're considering bariatric surgery as a weight loss solution, understanding the different types of procedures can be a crucial part of your journey. Bariatric surgery is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. The three primary options — Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy and duodenal switch — each offer unique benefits and may be more suitable depending on your specific circumstances. Discover the details and differences of each procedure to help you make an informed decision.

Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RNY)

The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass creates a small pouch within your stomach, which connects directly to your small intestine, bypassing a large part of your stomach and a portion of your small intestine. This action reduces the amount of food you’re able to consume at a time and the calories your body absorbs, promoting weight loss.

This procedure may be a good choice if you have severe acid reflux or GERD, as it can significantly reduce reflux symptoms. RNY can be a viable way to lower your body mass index (BMI), as this procedure often results in significant weight loss. It may also be a good option to consider if you have Type 2 diabetes, as weight loss can help you more effectively manage and sometimes even resolve your diabetes symptoms.

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG)

The vertical sleeve gastrectomy removes approximately 80% of your stomach, leaving a narrow, tube-like "sleeve." This procedure reduces the quantity of food you can consume and influences hormonal changes that assist in weight loss.

VSG may be the best option if you prefer a less complex surgery. This procedure is simpler and includes fewer long-term risks and complications than other surgical weight-loss options. If you’re concerned about nutrient absorption, considering VSG might be a good idea as, unlike other surgical options, VSG won’t alter your small intestine, preserving normal absorption rates.

Duodenal Switch (DS)

The duodenal switch is a combination of procedures — it begins with a sleeve gastrectomy, after which the small intestine is rerouted to limit calorie absorption. This surgery is more complex than the others, though it can offer more substantial weight loss.

You may consider choosing a duodenal switch if your BMI is very high, as DS procedures tend to result in the highest total weight loss results. Similar to the RNY procedure, a DS surgery will also provide health benefits for patients with Type 2 diabetes. However, if you are considering this procedure, it’s important to understand the need for rigorous follow-up. Careful long-term monitoring and vitamin supplementation are necessary, as DS procedures can often lead to potential nutrient deficiencies.
